MEDIA ADVISORY, Mar. 20 /Christian Newswire/ — Abortion is America’s second Civil War. Abortion polarized this country even before Roe vs. Wade, the Supreme Court ruling which legalized it in 1973. Jessica Shaver captures the drama, tension and pathos of this battle in her novel “Compelling Interests.” She draws readers through sixty years of contemporary history, from the 1940’s to “sometime in the 21st century,” when Roe vs. Wade may be overturned. One author calls her book “The War and Peace of the abortion controversy.”
Jessica believes this polarization can be resolved. “Many of us are passionate about this issue though we may be on opposing sides,” she says. “We aren’t listening to each other. By trying to accurately and sympathetically represent views all along the spectrum, I hope pro-choice and pro-life people will each feel heard and because of that, risk listening to the hearts of those on the other side.” She believes if both sides are presented fairly, the pro-life side will prove the more persuasive.
Jessica has long had compassion for women with unwanted pregnancies and their babies, as well as for women whose abortions have been traumatizing. (“Compelling Interests” ripened slowly over 30 years of research and writing.) Woven throughout this compelling treatment are the lives of Gwen, who flies to Japan to bring unwanted Japanese babies to adoptive homes in the States; Cecile, a feminist author of a book on self-abortion; Supreme Court Justice Weiss, struggling with whether to vote to legalize abortion or not; a millionaire abortionist haunted by his dreams; a young Hispanic woman who takes pregnant women into her own home; an adopted teenager who nearly dies from a legal abortion, the fellow college student who loves her.
While mostly fictional, the novel interweaves real people into its plot: devout Catholic Joan Andrews, sentenced to five years in prison for interfering with abortions; Mother Teresa, Margaret Sanger, James Dobson, Phyllis Schlafly.
Meticulously researched and historically accurate, “Compelling Interests” is primarily a story of lives impacted by and intersecting because of abortions, women whose experiences motivate them to change society in very different ways.
